Abubakar Nyawi Adende Bankole

January 23, 1955 - July 01, 2024

Abubakar Bankole was known for his passionate pursuits of knowledge, kinship and good food. These pursuits often resulted in lively conversations and elaborate meals that both served to nurture the community he built around him. Anyone who has ever had the pleasure to share a meal or conversation with Abubakar can attest to his wisdom, kindness, and humor. His natural curiosity and zest for life took him from Detroit, Michigan to Northern California.  With the Bay Area as a home base, he built community across the globe as he explored his faith in people through martial arts, photography, research and spirituality. Raising his son Taamiti, with his loving wife Carolyn, was one of his proudest achievements. He was also a proud grandfather to Olivia, who shares his voracious appetite for knowledge and flavor. He will live on through his family, and the lives of all the people who carry memories of him as a teacher, mentor, friend and loved one.

The family will forgo a traditional memorial service. Honoring Abubakar’s wishes, they encourage everyone to honor Abubakar’s life by celebrating the things that made him the happiest. Those lucky enough to ever share a meal, cigar, whiskey, classroom or dojo with him will have no shortage of ways to honor and remember Abubakar in those moments of connection that made him the happiest. As a tribute to his love of nature, trees will planted in the Sequoia National Forest. Those wishing to contribute to that effort can do so here.

Never one to shy away from conflict, or tolerate injustice, Abubakar wielded his powerful presence to promote respect and kindness in all interactions. He cared deeply about others and had strong faith in the goodness of people and the power of positive change. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that you consider supporting or visiting one of the places listed below In Abubakar’s Honor:
