Charles Michael Mathews

March 16, 1950 - July 25, 2024

Charles Michael Mathews was born March 16th 1950.  He was know to his friends and family as 'Chucky'.
He was the 5th child born to Charles Lewis Mathews and Thelma Edmonds Mathews.
His closest sibling was already 17 years old when he was born.  His parents went on to have one more child.  These 2 young brothers, the babies of this large family, were mischievous and extremely close.
Chucky was a very active, imaginative, intelligent child.  As a young man, his greatest loves were reading and music. He loved Edgar Allen Poe, Ray Bradbury and all things related to science fiction.

He was raised in a Christian home and baptized at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles.
At 6'4 he towered above most of his friends.  Though he had the physical advantag  and ability, he did not participate in athletics. Instead, he enjoyed horticulture, history and science.  Thanks to his studious nature he earned a four year academic scholarship to UCLA.
He pursued his interest in college, but after a few years he decided that he no longer wanted to be a 'starving student'.  From that point on he led a rather colorful life.

He was employed as a records clerk for Los Angeles County at LA Superior Court and Martin Luther King Hospital.  He also worked for the railroad and volunteered at the Salvation Army for many years. He was a cashier at many of the major markets in the Los Angeles area.  Throughout his life he persued a wide variety of jobs and interest.

Chucky loved his family and made it a point to visit and keep in touch with everyone.  He was a kind hearted and considerate man.  He was always quick to show appreciation for the smallest kindness offered. to him.

He lost his mother as a very young man in 1972.  He lost his father in 1986. His 2 brothers and 3 sisters also preceded him in death.

Chucky had been seriously ill for many months. He had been placed into the care of Friendship Hospice at Rinaldi Convalescent Care in Granada Hills, California. On July 25, 2024, he passed away peacefully in his sleep from the combined effects of COPD and heart disease.

He leaves to mourn his passing his son Hakeem Khaliiq, along with his wife Queen and their 5 chilldren, two great grandsons, his nieces and nephews, one brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law and a host of friends and family.

May he rest in everlasting love and peace.
