Sandra Ann Rimel

February 25, 1949 - November 12, 2025

Sandra Ann “Sandee” Rimel
February 25, 1949 – November 12, 2025

Sandra Ann “Sandee” Rimel, beloved widow of Joseph Henry “Buddy” Rimel III, and cherished mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, teacher, and best friend passed away peacefully at Palomar Hospital in Escondido, California, on November 12, 2025, following a courageous two-year battle with breast cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Alhambra, California, on February 25, 1949, to  Warren Hill Shearer and Helen Francis Joy Shearer, Sandee grew up in Southern California and attended Clairemont High School. After the passing of her husband, she courageously raised four children as a single mother while pursuing her education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communicative Sciences from the prestigious University of California, San Diego.

Sandra, a beloved member of her family and community, bore a name of profound meaning. A short form of the Greek Alexandra, it means “defender of mankind” or “helper of mankind.” True to her name, Sandra devoted her life to supporting, caring for, and protecting those around her, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Those closest to Sandra would attest to the anointing of wisdom and grace she carried as a devotee of Truth. A true wordsmith, she navigated life’s challenges as a crossword solver does—delighting in each puzzle, savoring the process, and uncovering answers with patience and insight.

Sandee devoted much of her life to teaching English as a Second Language, inspiring students from around the world. She served as a Cambridge ESL and TESOL/TEFL Instructor at ICC Hawaii, and as Director of Studies at the International School of Languages in San Diego. Her love for teaching created lifelong connections that spanned continents, and she was deeply cherished by all who had the privilege of learning from her. Sandee was known to have a genuinely magnetic presence, and doubled as an Entertainer and Performer in her classroom.

A passionate performer, Sandra shared her love of the performing arts throughout the San Diego, and Orange County theater community.  She was an active actress with the North Park Vaudeville & Candy Shoppe Improv Troupe, participating in numerous productions. One of her proudest achievements was writing, producing, and performing in a Cabaret comedy skit titled “Nice and Easy” with her daughter Jennifer in 2008. She also performed in many theater productions with her son Jason across San Diego County.

In 2014, she starred in Quilters at the Cabrillo Playhouse in San Clemente, California, earning the Outstanding Actress Award for her unforgettable performance. Her presence on stage, full of warmth, humor, and joy, left a lasting impression on every audience she touched.

Sandra lived most of her life in San Diego and later spent several years in Waikiki, Hawaii, where she learned to play the ukulele. She could often be found on the white sandy beaches, strumming her favorite songs such as “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and “Redemption Song” under the shade of a palm tree.

In her final years, she also lived on and off in the great Smokey Mountains of Waynesville, North Carolina. Her deep faith in Jesus Christ guided her through both the challenges and joys of life. To her family, she was the Mother of the Century. Her unconditional love, kindness, and creative spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Sandee is survived by her children: Cynthia Ann Rimel, Charity Ann Rimel, Jason Christopher Rimel, and Jennifer Christine Rimel-Basham; her son-in-law, Michael Timothy Rimel-Basham; Jim Bradley MacArthur; and her grandchildren: Sienna Rose Rimel-Basham, Ethan Caleb Rimel-Basham, Lilian Rachel Koerth, Eva Jane Koerth, Juliet Rimel Peralta, Joseph Rimel Peralta, Jameson Dylan MacArthur, and Sean Wesley MacArthur. She is also survived by her sisters, Deborah Axton and Susan Zimmerman; her nephews, Michael Zimmerman, John Meyer, and Jeffrey Meyer; and her nieces, Sara Zimmerman, Emily Barry, and Michele  Cerminara.

Special Mention of Departed Nephew William Zimmerman and Brother Gary
Shearer-

Her legacy of love, creativity, and joy will endure in all who were blessed to know her.

Charity Rimel My beloved Mom. You taught me how to be strong. You showed me how to be kind. You made me laugh. You made me cry. All for love. True love that spans a lifetime will do that. Now I see the blessing in the ups and downs and highs and lows. You were always so tuned in to nature and real nature is about ups and downs. I don't think we are meant to just be a slow moving, steady stream all the time. I remember you guiding me through this truth as a girl becoming a women. You said take the pain in waves. Rest when the pain subsides and don't think about the next wave that will come crashing in. That is what we did in your last months of life. We tried to enjoy the peacful times and did not focus on what was to come -your flight to heaven. That was your way. We had difficulties in life as mother and daughters often do. I expected too much and did not appreciate you enough in my younger years. I wanted more of a mommy and less of a friend. Later in life and especially now that you have taken flight, I realized that I was so blessed to have you as such a dear friend and my prayer partner. You made everyones life around you better, being the helper and defender of mankind that you were. You were a true and dedicated friend and you made sure to pray for your family --all of them -- every day. I was so happy just to have you with me everyday those last months. You were one that did not like to stay in one place and San Diego, Oahu, Dana Point, Big Island, North Carolina were all blessed to have you. Now I can see you wandering the golden roads of heaven lined with bright lights, angels singing and dancing and Sandee bathed in pure love. One day we will all be reunited. Until then I will keep on praying and you are still my prayer partner. I won't forget the prayer you named me after: "Corinthians 13 King James Version 13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing." I will also remember your song to me, "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley-- who wrote the song about his mortality while battling cancer. You were a strong believer in faith and that we could heal ourselves. "My hand was made strong by the hand of the almighty" Your hand here on Earth grew cold, while your hand was made strong in heaven. You were healed and I believe as much as you wanted to stay here with us, God showed you that the way to healing was to let go of our hand and grab on to the lords hand. You will be paving the way for all those you loved here on Earth. Mothers Day is going to be so hard without you here, so I will pray for Grace for our family here that we can carry your love with us tommorrow and the rest of life and therafter. I love you Mom. Forever. Love, Your Daughter Charity

Glen Basham It is my honor to have known Sandra Ann Rimel during her North Carolina years, as a fellow grandparent to dear Sienna and Ethan Basham. ❤️❤️ We shared many lovely family meals together with the Bashams at our mountain retreat in Waynesville, North Carolina. Sandra was a lovely, intelligent and gracious lady with an enchanting smile and a beautiful heart. Sandra will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Our prayers go out to her extended family, that they would be surrounded with Comfort and Peace that surpasses all understanding, through the love of Jesus Christ, Whom Sandra adored and with Whom she will spend eternity.
